Hugo, Victor
► (1802-85) Escritor francés, máxima figura del romanticismo. Llegó pronto a ser el jefe indiscutible de la escuela romántica (su prólogo al drama Cromwell, en 1827, se considera el manifiesto del romanticismo). Su republicanismo le valió el destierro (1851), que duró dieciocho años. Su obra, que abarca todos los géneros, es apasionada, vibrante, imaginativa, con dominio de la lengua y una gran fecundidad verbal; de ella se desprende un gran amor a la naturaleza y a los humildes. Entre su obra poética destaca Las orientales (1829) y en su producción dramática Hernani(1830), de ambiente español, que señala el triunfo del romanticismo en Francia. Como novelista escribió Nuestra Señora de París (1831) y Los miserables (1862), entre otras.
